Charta Collection

The inspiration for the Charta Alba Collection originated from a series of sculptures crafted using brown wrapping paper salvaged from an Amazon shipping box. The artist’s goal was to create something new and refined from discarded, everyday material. Each sculpture was formed from a single sheet of paper, carefully wound around a vertical axis to create dynamic, flowing shapes. The natural wrinkles in the paper became an ideal canvas for the interplay of light and shadow.

Seeking to elevate the humble paper into a material of elegance and permanence, the artist chose porcelain—a medium historically revered and once nicknamed “White Gold” in the 18th century. The transformation from soft, brown wrapping paper to solid, white porcelain is intended to surprise and intrigue the viewer. The collection’s name, Charta Alba, Latin for “white paper,” is a play on both the appearance of the porcelain and the paper origin of the forms.

To bring this vision to life, the artist partnered with the renowned Vienna Augarten Porcelain Manufactory, the second oldest porcelain producer in Europe, with a heritage spanning over 300 years. Their exceptional craftsmanship—especially in producing high-quality bisque porcelain—was crucial to the project, as the unglazed finish leaves no room for imperfection. Moreover, creating molds for sculptures of this scale demanded a high level of expertise, experience, and precision.
